We had a report of a few minkes hanging out off of Summerville Head.  Nice to see a few whales moving in already.  They're probably feeding on herring right now.  Have also heard that the beluga that was stuck in White Bay a couple of weeks ago has moved on now.  Stay tunned
for more whale news.

April 25, 2010
We just heard that there are approximately 800 icebergs off the coast of Labrador.  Let's hope for favourable winds and currents to blow them down our way.  Keep watching on  http://www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/Icebergs/IcebergFinder/IcebergFinder.aspx to see where they are.

Happy New Year!  Kris photographed a whale last season that had not been photographed since 1974 off the coast of Puerto Rico.  Check out the
article about it at:

So far it has been an amazing fall season for whales!  Yesterday, we saw minkes, fin whales, a humpback whale and lots and lots of white sided dolphins.  We have heard sperm whales on the hydrophone and have heard reports of them in the Bonavista Bay area but have not seen them yet.  This is a beautiful time of year on the water with the crisp air, all of the trees changing colour and of course the whales!!

August 21, 2009
The storm a couple of days ago seems to have brought in lots of whales.  There have been approximately 8 humpbacks between Robin Hood Bay and Horse Chops in the last couple of days.  They are still feeding pretty heavily and still lunge feeding too.  The fin whales are still hanging around and they are also lunge feeding.  It seems that most of the capelin spawning has finished.  As soon as those eggs start to hatch, we'll have squid and squid eaters in!  Can't wait!!

August 18, 2009
There have been several days of crazy lunge feeding in Trinity Bay since our last entry.  Both fin whales and humpbacks are getting their fill of capelin and herring.  There are still lots of whales in the area.  The sperm whales are still off Bonaventure and the beluga is still hanging out in Bonavista Bay.  There have been reports of squid in the area though we haven't seen any yet.  Looking forward to seeing some squid feeding behaviour from the minkes and fins.  Also hoping for some pilot whales in the near future.

August 9, 2009
Another great day on the water.  Bright and sunny and lots of whales!  We had a young humpback lunge feeding almost on the beach in Pigeon Cove.  Later on tonight we had a fin whale lunge feeding on herring right beside the boat.  There were also white beaked dolphins tonight.

August 6, 2009
There have been lots of active humpbacks in the last few days.  Feeding in groups as large as 8 and then single whales as well.  Today we got, the shot of a lifetime, a double breach by two adult humpbacks, check out the photo gallery.

August 1, 2009
The reports of orcas were confirmed today.  We spent most of the day with a group of approximately 20 orcas in Bonavista Bay.  There were three males in this group.

 July 30, 2009
What a beautiful day!  Woke up to solid fog in Trinity Bay so we moved the boat to King's Cove, Bonavista Bay where we had received reports that there were whales.  We were not disappointed.  We spent 9 hours in total yesterday with at least 8 humpbacks.  They were lunge feeding, lob tailing, flipper slapping, breaching, and sometimes all 8 of them were feeding all together!! VERY NICE!!! Also had reports of orcas in the area yesterday but did not see any ourselves.

July 29, 2009
We had great trips today.  Lots of BIG fin whales, we even saw the tail of one as he did a sideways lunge (very rare), a couple of minkes and two sperm whales.  One of those sperm whales may be a new individual.

July 25, 2009
What an exceptional day on the water.  Light winds, bright sun and whales!  We had 2 humpbacks, 2 fin whales and approximately 50 white beaked dolphins on our trip today.  The best part about today is that we had a whale watch us for a good chunk of the three hour trip.  This whale spent lots of time gazing at us from just below the surface we all got really good looks at her and her at us, spy hopping, rolling, tail lobbing, tail breaching and lunge feeding.  When got back on shore and checked our catalogue, we realized that this whale is a whale that we named Cathryn in 2007 who we have had a couple of similar encounters with over the years.  She just enjoys watching people on our boat!

July 24, 2009
For the past 8 days we have bee able to hear the sperm whales but have not seen them, causing us to question the range of our hydrophone (much longer than we thought).  Today we saw the sperm whales again and there was a new male with them! He is missing quite a chunk form his tail fluke.  So our grand total for sperm whales now is four in our study area.  We continue to see lots of BIG fin whales and playful white beaked dolphins feeding together.

July 20, 2009
The capelin are finally rolling in the area and the whales are in and are busy feeding.  The beluga is still on the Bonavista Bay side of the peninsula and has take to stripping sea weed off of anchor lines and ropes.  The three sperm whales are still in our area too.  We have seen several large fin whales in the last few weeks.  We have had a few mother and calf humpback pairs and several other single whales in the last week.  We have even re-sighted a whale that was tangled up in ropes last year when we saw her and we were unable to get close enough to help her. The best news is....no ropes this year!!  We have added about 20 new humpback whales to our catalogue so far this season and are hoping for several more before the
end of the season.  There have also been lots of white beaked dolphins and harbour seals around.  Check out our photo album at photos.princeowhalesadventures.com.

July 6, 2009
There are several icebergs in the area, some that are just enormous!! There have been humpbacks, fin whales, and minke whales.  We have seen minke and humpback breaches in the last few days.  The beluga whale is still in the area and we spent a couple of hours with him last night.  We've named him Bert.  There are several eagles in the area and a few nests with chicks hatched out.  We are still waiting for the capelin.  We are expecting them to roll within the next week.

June 25, 2009
The whales and icebergs have arrived!  The first of the humpbacks arrived last week and they are HUNGRY.  Earlier this week we saw lunge feeding!  There is an iceberg not far outside of Trinity harbour and several others around the peninsula.

May 31, 2009
Our brand new Zodiac has just arrived and we are very excited to get started for the season.  On Friday, the beluga whale was re-sighted after weeks of absence.  The whale appears to be a juvenile and spent a great deal of time around the wharf playing with boats and anchor lines.

April 29, 2009
The beluga whale has been sighted in Princeton, Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland.
